Raspberry Ketones: Useful or Unsafe?

  |  Sarah Fields

Millions of people around the world are classified as being obese.  Several decades ago the number of people included in this group was very little in comparison to where those figures are now.  The corresponding increase in conditions and diseases that are directly connected to obesity—type II diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and many others—have caused people to become desperate in searching for weight loss solutions.

Weight loss products (such as pills, liquids and even patches) have been popping up in the industry seemingly every day and billions of dollars are spent annually on infomercials and magazine advertisements specifically designed to win people over.  Some of the products that have grown in popularity in recent years, thanks to celebrity endorsements and international promotion, are products made up of raspberry ketones.

What are Raspberry Ketones?

Recent Scientific research studies have uncovered some interesting facts about raspberry ketones and weight loss. The natural phenolic compounds that give raspberries, blackberries and cranberries an enticing aroma are referred to as raspberry ketones. The molecular structure of these ketones is similar to capsaicin, which can be found in hot chili peppers and has been linked to weight loss success.

The Up Side of Raspberry Ketones

Raspberry ketones increase the level of adiponectin, a protein that regulates our metabolism and allows us to break up the fat stored within cells. In addition, this hormone is known to have properties that impact the regulation of glucose in the blood as well as play a role in the processing of fatty acids in the blood stream. Generally adiponectin levels tend to be prominent in blood plasma, however, obesity may actually cause those levels to decrease. Studies have shown that an individual who is overweight or has type 2 diabetes exhibits lower levels of adiponectin, which may result in weight gain.

Taking raspberry ketones increases the adiponectin hormone level which boosts metabolism and results in weight loss. Our bodies are then able to burn through the fat, which means that you’re able to lose weight sooner rather than later. Clinical trials and tests have been conducted on raspberry ketone and it’s been shown to be both safe and effective.  The raspberry ketones enzyme is a fully natural ingredient so you don’t have to worry about unnatural chemicals, fillers, or harsh stimulants.

The Down Side of Raspberry Ketones

Most people know that the side effects for the actual ketones themselves are minimal, ifyou’re not taking any medication.   People that are taking medication for depression, asthma, diabetes, CVD or even anxiety should not take raspberry ketones because of the adverse effect that it can have. It’s always a good idea to contact your family physician before introducing any supplement or medication into your daily regimen.

The Choice is Yours

While raspberry ketones seem to be the wave of the future when it comes to weight loss products and dietary supplements (it’s even been featured on the Dr. Oz show), it’s always recommended to research any supplement or medication before taking it.
